At the head of a remote Maine harbor, the 60-some workers of the Brooklin Boat Yard coax wooden planks around a frame, make precise saw cuts, and sand edges for flawless joints, resulting in some of the most stunning and sought-after wooden vessels in the world. Over the course of four vibrant seasons, director Luke Lorentzen tracks the boatbuilders’ meticulous construction of a 56-foot sailboat while embedding us in the lives of these men and their close-knit community. Intertwining the rhythms of the boatyard and the natural world, Boatbuilders is a meditation on the pleasures that reward sustained attention and the potential to create meaning by engaging deeply with what we do and where we are.

A Still Small Voice follows Mati, a chaplain completing a year-long hospital residency, as she learns to provide spiritual care to people confronting profound life changes. Through Mati’s experiences with her patients, her struggle with professional burnout, and her own spiritual questioning, we gain new perspectives on how meaningful connection can be and how painful its absence is.
“Absorbing.” “One of the best films of 2023.”– Alissa Wilkinson, The New York Times“Exquisite and extraordinarily intimate.”– Anthony Kaufman, Documentary Magazine
“It’s human and messy — and it’s divine.” – Amy Nicholson, The New York Times Critics Pick“A Still Small Voice is suffused with such sensitivity, poignancy, and artistry that it’s already being hailed as one of the best documentaries of the year. . . . A profoundly piercing chronicle of an individual under pressure and an institution in crisis.”– Anthony Kaufman, DOC10 Chicago
“Penetrating and deeply moving. . . . Unforgettable.”– Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter“One of the more fascinating journeys I saw this year.”– Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming
“One of the most rewarding character studies audiences will see this year. . . . therapeutically moving and a work of radical empathy for turbulent times.”– Pat Mullen, POV Magazine“At once an eloquent reflection on mortality and a quintessential document of the emotional and spiritual burdens of great responsibility, Luke Lorentzen’s A Still Small Voice finds the universal in the particular experience of a hospital chaplain . . . . Lorentzen’s incredibly attuned, efficient filmmaking set this film apart in a crowded field of works on life and death and healthcare.”– Nicolas Rapold, Sight & Sound
“A Still Small Voice holds wisdom enough to apply to us all. [Mati’s] lack of cynicism and her respect and care for patients and their families is so astounding it feels almost miraculous . . . . The camera sits quietly and nonjudgmentally so that soft-spoken subjects can explore and express the grandest themes imaginable: what it means to live, and how we learn to die.”– Elizabeth Weitzman, The Wrap“Give[s] voice to America’s collective grief in a way that little else has.”– Christian Blauvelt, IndieWire

In Mexico City, the government operates fewer than 45 emergency ambulances for a population of 9 million. This has spawned an underground industry of for-profit ambulances often run by people with little or no training or certification. An exception in this ethically fraught, cutthroat industry, the Ochoa family struggles to keep their financial needs from jeopardizing the people in their care. When a crackdown by corrupt police pushes the family into greater hardship, they face increasing moral dilemmas even as they continue providing essential emergency medical services.“Outstanding.... Fantastically shot by the director Luke Lorentzen, the documentary develops an urgency that suits the life-or-death stakes onscreen. By turns terrifying and exhilarating, Midnight Family unfolds with such velocity that it may take a while for your ethical doubts to catch up to what’s happening. When they do, they leave you gasping.”– Manohla Dargis, The New York Times Critic’s Pick“Arguably the most exhilarating documentary to come out of Sundance this year, Midnight Family follows the Ochoa family—the gruff but compassionate Fer and his two underage sons, Juan and Josué—at intensely close range on these Sisyphean missions of mercy.“– Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln CenterIncluded in the “10 Best Movies of Sundance 2019”“A deft mix of big-picture doc-making and intimate moments.... not to mention a wild—and remarkably eye-opening—ride.”– David Fear, Rolling Stone“This 81-minute masterpiece will change the way you look at documentaries forever; its style reads like an action movie, its themes like a socio-political drama, and, yet, it still is very much a work of non-fiction, with a camera always exactly positioned to capture a society on the brink of moral collapse.”– Jordan Ruimy, The Playlist“Profound and thrilling cinema verite filmmaking. The film is impeccably crafted by Luke Lorentzen…. What matters most here is Lorentzen’s intuition—he knows during many stunning moments just where to put the camera in such close quarters, letting us observe as harrowing drama and cinematic poetry unfolds…. Midnight Family is extremely visceral in the best way.”– Nick Allen, Roger Ebert.comIncluded in “21 Must-See Movies” at Sundance“An intimate verite documentary.... the Ochoas emerge as fascinating embodiments of a country working overtime to correct its shortcomings and keep the lights on. This bracing U.S. competition documentary is poised to provide a personal window into the fast-paced mayhem of Mexico after dark.”– Eric Kohn, IndieWire

Santa Cruz del Islote is a three-acre island fifty miles off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia. A community of about 600 people, it is one of the most densely populated islands in the world. This region's lucrative fishing, which encouraged such overdevelopment, has dwindled in recent years, and the island's subsistence has become increasingly uncertain. Following a fisherman and a ten-year-old boy, this short documentary captures the complexity of cherishing a peaceful way of life that can no longer continue with ease.
